This guide will help you understand your World-Wide Web Access Statistics report. This is not a real report; the information shown below is just an example. If you need help accessing the web report for your site, please contact our support department.

Daily Transmission Statistics

 9.17 8.30 87120 11 | Nov 3 1996
The table above is a day-by-day look at the traffic on a web site.

%Reqs is a percentage of the total number of requests during the report period.
%Byte is a percentage of the total number of bytes transferred during the report period.

A request is also known as a hit. A hit is recorded whenever a browser requests something from your site. This could be an HTML file, GIF, JPG, etc.

For example, if your home page had three pictures on it, it would register 4 hits when a browser connected to your URL: 1 for the page (html file), and 1 for each picture on the page.

The first entry on the table above can be read from right to left like this:

  • On 10/28/96, there were 16 hits on the server, totalling 65122 bytes.
  • 6.20 percent of the total number of bytes transferred during the report period were transferred on 10/28.
  • 13.33 percent of the total number of hits during the report period took place on 10/28.
Hits can be deceiving, however. If the 10/28 entry was a page that contained 15 pictures, it would mean that the page was only accessed once that day.

 3.33 0.31 3237 4 | 23
The table above tracks the traffic on a web site by the hour.

The first entry (midnight) can be read like this:

  • For the entire report period, there was only 1 hit and 98 bytes transferred between the hours of midnight and 1:00 AM.
  • 0.01 percent of the total number of bytes transferred were transferred during this hour of day.
  • 0.83 percent of the total number of hits took place during this hour of day.

Total Transfers by Client Domain

%Reqs %Byte Bytes Sent Requests Domain
----- ----- ------------ -------- |---------------------
 0.83 0.84 8860 1 | au Australia
 5.00 36.06 378547 6 | uk United Kingdom
14.17 16.18 169888 17 | com US Commercial
 6.67 3.78 39636 8 | net Network
38.33 4.47 46961 46 | alink.net
27.50 30.49 320061 33 | unresolved
The table above tracks from what domain the web site was hit.

The first entry can be read like this:

  • During the report period, there was only 1 hit from and 8860 bytes transferred to the au domain (Australia).
  • 0.84 percent of the total number of bytes transferred went to Australia.
  • 0.83 percent of the total number of hits came from Australia.
At the bottom of the table, the unresolved means that the server could not determine from which domain the hits came. It's nothing to worry about.

Total Transfers by Reversed Subdomain

%Reqs %Byte Bytes Sent Requests Reversed Subdomain
----- ----- ------------ -------- |------------------------------------
27.50 30.49 320061 33 | Unresolved
 0.83 0.84 8860 1 | au.edu.gu.itc
 1.04 3.10 99934 10 | com.sony
 0.63 2.17 69954 7 | com.caii
38.33 4.47 46961 46 | net.alink
 2.50 1.65 17281 3 | net.att.dial-access.ny.new-york-007
 0.83 0.35 3624 1 | net.igs.king
 3.33 1.78 18731 4 | net.prodigy.nyc
 5.00 36.06 378547 6 | uk.ac.hensa

This is essentially the same thing as the previous section except that it breaks the domains down further into subdomains. So, the third line here reports the portion of the web traffic of ".com" domains that came from sony.com.

Total Transfers from each Archive Section

%Reqs %Byte Bytes Sent Requests Archive Section
----- ----- ------------ -------- |----------------------------
13.33 6.15 64512 16 | /~crusso/
19.17 0.21 2254 23 | /~crusso/blank.shtml
 5.00 31.34 328968 6 | /~crusso/chris_lori.gif
 5.00 0.30 3174 6 | /~crusso/chris_lori.shtml
 8.33 0.70 7330 10 | /~crusso/chris_photo.shtml
 8.33 11.92 125160 10 | /~crusso/chris_photo.jpg
10.00 3.09 32471 12 | /~crusso/chris_photo_sm.jpg
The final section gives you the statistics as they apply to each file. As you can see, blank.shtml was the most "popular" page here.
